The birth of Restanza. From the figure to absence
Images are not born in front of a canvas. They are born much earlier.
Sometimes a door left ajar, an empty room, an object left in its place, a light that enters in silence is enough. In that instant I feel that the place continues to hold something, even though the people are no longer there.
For many years I painted the human figure. Then I understood that, in certain cases, absence tells more than presence. This is how my path dedicated to Restanza was born.
Restanza is not nostalgia. It is not the desire to go back. It is what remains when time has passed: a memory that continues to inhabit spaces, a trace that endures without making a sound.
Each of my works is born from an image that surprises me. I do not seek it: I recognise it. It is as if it had always been there, waiting to be truly looked at.
This is why I believe that the artist’s task is not to invent images, but to learn to see them. Only then can they be transformed into painting.
This project of mine is born precisely with this intent: to share the path that carries an image from memory to the canvas, showing how a place, a light or a small detail can become a work of art
