FLASH - PAINTING

Flash-painting ‘is a combination of languages and styles that Karam artist Sebastiano Cannarella harmoniously merges in the visual idyll of the union between art and photography, using different styles, colours and unprecedented painting techniques.

The artist, developing an entirely personal process, analyses the relationship between painting and photography in the ability to ‘capture the moment’, but at the same time revisits the masters of the past in a contemporary key. He questions the relationship between photography and painting and realises that a strong link has always united them, and this connection is the living red thread present in Cannarella’s paintings. The artist wants to tell an open dialogue between ‘brush and lens’ and in the work undertaken by the artist, these two visual techniques touch each other by overlapping, beyond the painting and before the photography, or before the painting and beyond the photography.

He approaches the process of composing a work of art as if he were a filmmaker: he develops the theme by pointing out a possible creative coexistence between painting and photography, highlighting the relationship between the two ‘artistic devices’ and the possible transformations in art. Starting from a photographic image, the artist portrays faces with the technique of oil painting, in some cases on acrylic backgrounds. What characterises these large-scale works is a particular and almost maniacal attention to detail, from design to composition.
Each subject is captured in its visual substance: this is why skin, fabrics, objects are isolated in space, in the contrast of light and shadow, giving maximum expressive power and highlighting the details that emerge from a material painting.
The subjects depicted on the canvas with scenographic taste in a skilful orchestration of shapes, colours, light and shadow, reveal the loving emotional participation with which the artist composes each work.
Faced with the astonishing richness of detail and the sharpness of his works – the result of a scrupulous study of the subject and of numerous executive steps that together determine the texture of the painting – the observer is called to a visual involvement that transforms the aesthetic experience into a true search for truth.
