Soft vigil<\/strong> imposes itself as a visual and sensory threshold, a territory suspended between intimacy and symbolic construction, where the body and the imaginary merge into a densely stratified oneiric dimension. The painting – oil on canvas, 100 x 100 cm – builds a scene that, despite its apparent chromatic sweetness, reveals an iconographic and psychological complexity that is anything but reassuring.<\/p>\n

At the centre of the composition, the female figure lies in a reclining pose that recalls both the tradition of the sensual portrait and that of the ecstatic vision. Her body, wrapped in a milky and iridescent light, seems to emerge from an environment that is not simply a space, but an extension of her own interiority. The dominant tones, violet, pink, pearl, build a deliberately hyper-aesthetic, almost artificial palette, which moves the scene away from any naturalism to bring it closer to a psychic dimension.<\/p>\n

The “vigil” of the title is not here a waking state in the rational sense, but a liminal condition: an emotional half-sleep in which the subject seems simultaneously present and elsewhere. The elements that populate the environment, plush toys, moons, stars, soft and enveloping forms, activate a childlike and affective imaginary, but are reworked through an adult, aware, almost performative lens. It is not nostalgia, but rather an aesthetic reappropriation of the language of tenderness, which becomes a visual code and a narrative device.<\/p>\n

Particularly significant is the gesture of the figure holding between her fingers a small mask or a decorative object: a detail that introduces the theme of identity as construction and, together, as disguise. The direct gaze towards the observer breaks the self-referential closure of the scene and activates an ambiguous relationship, in which the one who looks is called to question their own role: spectator, voyeur or interlocutor.<\/p>\n

From a technical point of view, the painting is distinguished by a controlled but visible gesturality. The pictorial matter is not completely smoothed, but retains a vibration that contributes to the tactile quality of the image. The brushstrokes, though integrated into a harmonious whole, remain perceptible and reinforce the sensory dimension of the work. The surface is never neutral: every chromatic passage builds depth, but also a kind of perceptual instability.<\/p>\n

The work implicitly dialogues with an iconographic tradition that ranges from the baroque portrait to contemporary visual culture, including references to fashion photography, queer aesthetics and the construction of identity through the body. However, what emerges most clearly is the capacity to transform these references into a coherent and recognisable language, in which the decorative is never an end in itself, but functional to the construction of a symbolic system.<\/p>\n

Soft vigil<\/strong> does not tell a linear story, but proposes a condition: that of an existence that moves between exposure and protection, between the desire to show oneself and the need to take refuge. It is an image that seduces and, at the same time, holds back; that welcomes the gaze, but does not completely satisfy it. In this tension resides its strength: in succeeding in making visible a fragile balance, in which softness becomes not only a formal quality, but an emotional and critical category.<\/p>\n

Already welcomed elsewhere, the painting has found its home: a vigil that continues, silent, in the gaze of the one who has chosen it.<\/p>\n
